STATEMENT: RACIAL EQUITY INFRASTRUCTURE PILOT WILL RECONNECT COMMUNITIES
The Program is a Historic First for Equity in Infrastructure
WASHINGTON, DC — Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced the launch of a historic, $1 billion pilot program that will reconnect neighborhoods divided by past road projects.
Infrastructure has historically been used to disenfranchise communities of color, with physical infrastructure and transportation systems that cut through neighborhoods, isolate communities of color, and expose them to a disproportionate amount of pollution and hazard.
Cities and states can apply for funding, which comes from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, for planning, design, demolition, and development of street grids, parks, and other infrastructure.
Invest in America senior advisor Zac Petkanas issued the following statement:
“Infrastructure must bring communities together, not divide them. The Reconnecting Communities program is a significant step to make our cities more equitable and ensure more people feel the benefits of infrastructure investments.
“This program is another policy that will transform countless communities across the country thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the American Rescue Plan. It’s clear that public investments are revitalizing America, and we must continue to invest in American communities and families to build on the historic progress we made in 2021.”
About Invest in America
Invest In America is a national rapid response operation advocating for robust public investment to rescue the economy from the COVID crisis and create prosperity for the future, and to fight back against fear-mongers who use deficit concerns as a scapegoat to starve American communities and businesses of resources.
The operation consists of two components: Invest in America, the charitable and public education arm, which is a fiscally sponsored project of Economic Security Project funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and Economic Security Project co-chair Chris Hughes; and Invest in America Action, the advocacy and social welfare arm, which is a fiscally sponsored project of Economic Security Project Action funded by Chris Hughes and the Omidyar Network.
