SHOT/CHASER: RIGHT-WING CLAIMS AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN BAILS OUT BLUE STATES, BUT MORE THAN HALF OF RELIEF FUNDS WOULD GO TO STATES GOVERNED BY REPUBLICANS
Conservatives attacking the American Rescue Plan are claiming that the $350 billion allocated to help state and local governments keep essential workers on the job, get Americans vaccinated, and support local economies is a “bail out” for blue states.
But the truth is that more than $180 billion of those funds would go to states that President Trump won in 2020, states with Republican governors, and states with at least one Republican senator.
State and local governments face staggering budget shortfalls of at least $300 billion through 2022. That does not include a host of additional Covid-related costs, like testing and tracing, providing PPE, and emergency mental health and food assistance programs. Nor does it include lost investments from states forced to scale back plans. Read more on why $350 billion is urgently needed here.
