WI STATE TREASURER ON YAHOO FINANCE: ‘WISCONSINITES ARE STILL HURTING’ WHILE WAITING FOR FEDERAL COVID-19 AID

Today, Wisconsin State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski joined Yahoo Finance Live to discuss the urgent need for state and local aid as part of the American Rescue Plan.

Treasurer Godlewski was one of 17 state treasurers who signed a letter organized by Invest in America Action urging their Congressional delegations to support the American Rescue Plan, which includes $350 billion in state and local aid to keep essential workers on the job, support vaccination efforts, and to open schools safely.

They are having to furlough their essential workers and cut back on essential services, whether its EMS, fire fighters, or even teachers. More aid is needed, and the sooner we can get that aid, the better.”

In February, state and local governments shed 83,000 jobs, including 69,000 educator jobs, according to today’s report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That adds to the nearly 1.4 million workers that states and local governments have had to layoff since the pandemic began — nearly double the amount of job losses during the Great Recession.
